Record #1 – Girl Pole Vault Youth & National Junior Record

Henderson Secondary School‘s Carmel Teo record breaking feat during earlier afternoon session of SAA Track & Field Series 2 was the first of two athletes from Coach David Yeo stable of pole vaulters that produced two out of a total three records that was broken at this 2-day meet.
The 16-year-old improved her own record by a centimeter on her very first attempt after initially clearing 2.75 metres. It previously stood at 3.20 metres established last year June at the inaugural 1st Singapore U23/Open Championship.
The record now stands at 3.21 metres, pending ratification by SAA.
Record #2 – Boys Pole Vault Youth Record
Chan, Sheng Yao 16 HCI 4.63m
Hwa Chong Institution Chan Sheng Yao yesterday at the 2012 SAA Track and Field Series 2 raised Singapore boys’ youth record by a centimeter to 4.63 metres.
His first pole vault trial at 4.40 metres was 20 centimeters better than his second place competitor, and Chan Sheng Yao easily cleared that height with room to spare.
The 16-year-old then raised the bar another 23 centimeters gunning for his own youth record which previously stood at 4.62 metres , set last year in July at the SAA Track and Field Series 5.
That performance last year alone, he surpassed the pole vault 2011 SEA Games qualifying mark but the bespectacled athlete was too young to be considered for a nomination under IAAF competition age ruling as he was still 15-years-old.
With 4.40 metres out of the way, Chan Sheng Yao first two attempts at 4.63 metres proved to be difficult as he snagged the pole vault bar on both occasion.
After receiving instructions from his Coach, David Yeo, he composed himself for a final try. Chan Sheng Yao in his last third attempt of his second pole vault trial finally registered a new youth record.
In the process the student athlete has surpassed pole vault qualifying mark for SEA Youth boys (4.40 metres), and the Asian Junior Championship (4.50 metres).
Chan Sheng Yao brimming with confidence after soaring over 4.63 metres then attempted to break his training partner Sean Lim’s pole vault men national record of 4.82 metres by attempting 4.83 metres.
But the height proved too tough for him and he failed at all three attempts. With a new record in the bag by Chan Sheng Yao, the athletes from Coach David Yeo pole vaulting stable nearly made a clean sweep of Singapore pole vault records ranging from the national, juniors, youth and age-group, except for one, the Under-23 women.
Record is pending ratification by SAA.
