Q) What are your hopes, dream and target this SEA Games?

To better my SB and PB

Q) How’s your preparation for the SEA Games?

There have been multiple injuries which hindered my progress but they are much better now.

Q) What are some of the biggest challenges in your sports career so far leading to SEA Games and your athletics career?

Recovering of throwing form post army and also finding breakthroughs in my sporting career. Disruptions during the examination period has also posed problems to my development progress.

Q) How did you specialise in your particular event? Why this event, what’s the attraction?

I do not have the size for the other throwing events so I settled for javelin throwing and the part that lures me back into throwing was the feeling of a well-connected throw.

Q) Who is your coach, tell us more about him/her. Also a mention of your previous coaches.

I am currently training under Mr Ng Bock Huat, the current National Record holder for the event. He has many years of experience in this field and has worked with many athletes in the past and having been under his guidance for close to a decade, he probably knows how my body reacts to certain training regime more than me.

Before I met Mr Ng in 2008, I was under Mr Wong Chong Sai, who coaches the pole vault event in Victoria School. He focused on general fitness, agility and technique which is very important for this event.

I am lucky to have met these two coaches who have taught me lessons beyond the sport.

Q) Do you take care of your nutrition and diet? Your opinion on supplements and food.

I try to keep my diet in general proportions, proteins roughly 60%, carbs 40% inclusive of vegetables. Fruits are also consumed regularly and I take vitamin and fish oil daily. Oh, and I would also take whey protein after a hard gym session.

Q) Aside from athletics, what else interest you? You could say the other part of your life beyond athletics.

I study using the remaining time I have apart from training but the real interest in going to school is spending time with my friends.

Q) How do you fit in your training/competing with your family and studies/work?

We all have 24 hours a day, so I try to prioritize things. A friend told me once, “Everything is important, but what is urgent?” hence determine what is urgent and plan your time according to those things.

Q) Share with the readers, some aspects of your training regime.

I do 3x technical and speed training, 2x weights training per week. I plan these with my coach to suit my body and also work around my current work load.

Q) What are your long term athletics goals?

Achieve the best possible throw.

Q) What advice do you have for young aspiring athletes?

Be open to suggestions, understand what these people are trying to convey to you and use them to improve. There are many solutions to a single problem, test them out and find the one that is the most suitable for you. Above all, enjoy yourself.
