Last weekend, a group of Singapore junior and senior athletes of thirty one in strength traveled up North to Malacca for the annual Malaysian state Championship. The event was held between 14-15 May at the Hang Jebat stadium. Below are the highlighted performances by our athletes.

54.02s in the Men 400m Hurdles – Md. Zaki Sapari

19-years-old Republic Polytechnic student ran a sublime 54.02 seconds in the 400m hurdles height of 0.914m. That meets the bronze SEA Games qualifying mark of 54.15s, and also effectively put him number three on the all-time list of fastest E.T. timing in the event. Also it’s a new National junior boys record, pending ratification by SAA. The old mark was 54.66 seconds. Read his interview here.


3:18.35 in the Men 4x400m

The quartet of Firdaus Juhari, Ng Chin Hui, Zaki Sapari and Kenneth Khoo lowered the men 4x400m national team season-best to 3:18.35. This timing meets the bronze SEA Games qualifying mark of 3:26.46.


48.78s in the Men 400m – Kenneth Khoo

29-years-old PE teacher Kenneth Khoo lowered his season-best from 49.44 seconds to 48.78 seconds in Malacca. He effectively is now within 5% (48.85s) of SEA Games qualifying mark of 47.53s.


Men 100m – Amirudin Jamal & Gary Yeo

The 100m men finals at the Malacca Championship saw six out of the eight finalist turning out to be Singapore athletes. The head-to-head race saw Amirudin Jamal & Gary Yeo running 10.75 and 10.76 seconds respectively. Both timings are within the 5% (10.76s) of SEA Games qualifying mark of 10.61s. Amirudin Jamal won the race, while Gary grabbed silver.


3:55.36 in the Women 4x400m

The young quarter-mile relay squad of Wendy Enn, Valerie Seema Pereira, T.Piriyah and Dipna Lim Prasad saw the girls lowering their season-best of 3:59.04 to 3:55.36. They nearly shaved off four seconds to be within the 5% (3:55.60) of SEA Games qualifying mark of 3:49.28.


14.68s in the Women 100m Hurdles – Dipna Lim Prasad

20-year-old NTU undergrad ran 14.68 seconds at the Hang Jebat Stadium to be within the 6% (14.73s) of SEA Games qualifying mark of 14.21s in the 100m Hurdles Women (0.838m) event. Prior to Malacca Open, Dipna has ran faster this season at 14.57 seconds.


46.57m in the Women Discus – Wan, Lay Chi

23-years-old throw specialist, Wan Lay Chi is still on the hunt to qualify for the discus event SEA Games. Her 46.57 meters effort in Malacca could only muster a silver, and is now within 6% (46.45m) of SEA Games qualifying mark of 49.12m for Discus Throw Women (1kg). She has thrown further at 46.84 at Thai Open recently, and has qualified for SEA Games in the women shot put event.


22.12s in the Men 200m – Ng Chin Hui

17-years-old Raffles Institution junior ran in the open category. The stiffer competition saw him running a personal best of 22.12 seconds. This is the second time this season that the prodigal sprinter has met the IAAF World Youth qualifying mark 22.58s in the 200m Boys 200m event. The first was his 22.40 seconds effort at the recent National Schools.
