Two-years ago today on this date, long jumper Matthew Goh leapt into history as he erased the national record when he cleared 7.62 meters at the 2009 SEA Games.

He was leading the competition with his first jump attempt of 7.62 meters but the other long jumpers wasn’t about to settle for second-best.

Joebert Delicano of the Philippines, the eventual silver medalist took the lead from Matthew as he soared with 7.74 meters in the next jump.

Suparana Sukhasvasti Na Ayudhaya then stunned the field with a final jump attempt that earned him the gold medal with an effort of 7.83 meters.

The 25th edition of the SEA Games held in Vientiane, Laos finally saw the then 18-year-old finishing sixth in a tough men final in recent memory.

Matthew was just 11 centimeters short from grabbing a podium finish. The fourth and sixth spot was closely separated by 3 centimeters.

The Singapore Sports School alumni in total had three successful attempts, while fouling his other three.

Matthew is still around in the scene and is currently leading the 2010-2011 rankings in the men long jump event with 7.14 meters (-1.4m/s). Although still active, he’s taking a break from serious training and is contemplating his future as he embarks to further his studies at SMU.

He is also the record holder in the long jump for Under-23 (7.62m), Junior (7.62m), Youth (7.02m) and Under-17 (7.02m).
