Mok Ying Ren will now get the nomination nod for his inclusion for the upcoming SEA Games 2011, as the NUS medical student ran a brilliant race in Japan yesterday not only managed to meet the SEA Games bronze qualifying mark, but also break the long-standing 15-year-old 5,000 meter men’s record, pending ratification by SAA.
The new mark now stands at 14:51.09.
The national record previously held by Nadarajan Ganesan whose mark of 14:57.61 set in Köln, Germany back on June 11, 1995 was erased by the 23-year-old Mok in a cold, drizzling venue of Kanagawa, south of Tokyo.
He participated in the Tokai University Time Trials where in Heat six of his 5,000m saw him starting slow at the back of the pack, not before picking up the pace, and ended the race fifth overall.
His final timing better the previous 3rd-place SEA Games result of 14:59.85 set as a benchmark by NSA for athletes to qualify for the SEA Games.
