Singapore Athletics’ Athletes selected for Commonwealth Youth Games
We are delighted to announce the selection of our talented athletes who will represent Team Singapore at the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinbago, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to these athletes, who have demonstrated their hard work, dedication, and commitment to Athletics.
The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) is an international multi-sport event organized by the Commonwealth Games Federation. The concept of the CYG was first discussed in 1997, with the aim of providing a Commonwealth multi-sport event for young people that is Under-18 years old.
Singapore’s best performance in the competition was Abdul Hakeem Abdul Halim’s Bronze medal in the Boys 110m hurdles event at the 2004 edition held in Bendigo, Australia. This event has been instrumental in the participation and development of our youth athletes, who have progressed to the Senior ranks, such as Ang Chen Xiang, the gold medalist in the 110m hurdles at the SEA Games, who took part at the CYG 2011 edition. “My Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Isle of Man, which meant multiple flights, change in time zones and competing in cooler temperatures. Being exposed to these changes at the youth level allowed me to learn how my body performed in such conditions, and to adjust my training and competition warm up to better account for the differences.”
