Athletic prowess on show at the SPH Schools Relay Championships 2012 – Registration opens from 2-29 February

Singapore, 1 February 2012 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), together with the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA), will host the annual SPH Schools Relay Championships at the Bukit Gombak Stadium on 10-11 March 2012. Participants from eligible schools and institutions can register from 2 February 2012.

2012 marks the 20th year of the SPH Schools Relay Championships. This highly anticipated event in the school sports calendar will see a total of 24 races held over the two day competition. The Championships comprises four types of relays – 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m – and will feature boys and girls in the A Division (17-19 years); B Division (15-16 years) and C Division (13-14 years).

There will be a total of six championship trophies given out to the division champions. The school with the most division championship titles will win the SPH Overall Champions Trophy.

The best-performing relay team will be awarded the Tay Cheng Khoon Memorial Trophy. Inaugurated in 2008, the memorial trophy recognises the most outstanding relay team in the year’s competition which successfully breaks an existing record by the biggest margin. Named after the late Sports Editor of The Straits Times who passed away in July 2007, the trophy is a tribute to his efforts as a school teacher who was passionate about sports, as well as his efforts to nurture youth through sports.

Ms Ginney Lim, SPH’s General Counsel and Executive Vice-President of Corporate Communications, said: “The SPH Schools Relay Championships is a major event in the track and field calendar. In the last 20 years, new athletic talents have been discovered and have progressed to representing Singapore and in establishing new national records. Its continuing success is only possible with the strong support from schools, athletes and parents. SPH looks forward to host once again, this year’s edition of the highly anticipated school sporting event.”

Mr Tang Weng Fei, President of SAA, said: “SAA would like to thank SPH for the many years of support and its role in the development of athletics in Singapore. The SPH Schools Relay Championships has established itself as a major event in the SAA calendar.”

Last year, Singapore Sports School won the SPH Overall Challenge Trophy by virtue of emerging as division champions in both the Boys’ and Girls’ B and C Divisions. Raffles Institution Junior College emerged as the A Division champions for both the Boys’ and Girls categories.

Five new records were established in last year’s competition. The Tay Cheng Khoon Memorial Trophy was awarded to the Singapore Sports School’s B Division Girls’ 4x100m team, who broke the record held by their predecessors set in 2006 by 1.59 seconds.

Entry forms for the SPH Schools Relay Championships are available on the SAA website at www.singaporeathletics.org.sg from 1 February 2012. Registration closes on 29 February 2012.
