Reflection by SA President Ho Mun Cheong at SA recent racewalk seminar.

“Dr John Tan gave a very interesting talk on gait analysis … present day very sophisticated equipment measuring differences in feet placement step length stride length cadence etc of left and right leg. Important with regards to efficency in movement and reduction in chances of injury. Race walking being more efficient is best starting exercise especially for the young as it teaches jmovement efficiency which will help in any sport later on and most importantly reduce chances of injury.

Mr V Subramaniam presented a little booklet to all the participants on his technique and training methods written from his own experience and observation in many years of race walking and coaching and his own reading and research on the subject. He hightighted some of the points essential to good technique in race walking and why walkers got disqualified in his presentation which was well received.

Mr Edmund Sim started his presentation by saying that it was the first time he was giving a talk on race walking in Singapore and appreciated the opportunity. He then went on to give us an inspiring interesting and revealing talk on his 20 years’ struggle in race walking from a complete newbee to the present day still not having fully fulfilled his ambition. Despite lack of resources and having to teach himself the basic technique and method of race walking in those days without the benefit of utubes etc and depending mainly on 2 racewalking websites in the U.S. he devised his own method of using his own shadows and the occasional reflecting surfaces at bus stands to check on his technique. He used his own limited resources to travel overseas to take part in races and workshops and make many friends and support groups in the race walking community there. His was a continuuing battle against odds and set backs but despite it all for the love of the sport and with the support of his family of many friends both here and overseas he would carry on.”
