Singapore, 1 August 2022 – Singapore Athletics (SA) today announced that additional support for our athletes will be made available through its overseas competition and training camp (OCTC) programme.

The programme, established in January 2022, was developed to support our athletes’ overseas competition and training costs in their preparations for the major games this year, including the SEA Games, Commonwealth Games, World Athletics Championships, and World Athletics U20 Championships. To-date, the programme has supported 28 athletes and 2 relay teams. The continuation of the OCTC programme will see the total support for athletes’ overseas training and competition needs increase threefold.

Lien Choong Luen, SA President, said: “The additional support through this scheme is timely for our athletes as they prepare for next year’s major games. We are committed to systematically helping our athletes succeed and the OCTC will provide continual support for the athletes to ride on their training momentum achieved this year”.

With the increase in funds, athletes have greater flexibility in bringing their coaches along for their trips, ensuring continuous guidance as part of the holistic plan and long-term development for the athlete.

Lien added: “We incorporated feedback from the fraternity, understanding their needs and training plans, and recognise the importance of continually exposing them to overseas trainings and competitions. Just as iron sharpens iron, they can learn from experiences and best practices, as well as compete against top athletes. The impact of this was evident in the recent performances at the SEA Games.”

The Hanoi SEA Games in May saw SA’s athletes clinch a total of 1 Gold, 3 Silvers and 7 Bronzes, for its best showing at the Games since 1993. This included 5 new national records and 8 personal bests.

Next year’s SEA Games in Cambodia is slated for 5-16 May 2023, and the association will be targeting another impressive showing from its athletes. In addition, the recently postponed Asian Games in Hangzhou and World Athletics Championships in Hungary are on the calendar for 2023.

The overseas competition and training support scheme is an initiative by Singapore Athletics to provide support for athletes competing in major games (Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, SEA Games) in 2022.

The support will provide athletes who have qualified, and are looking to travel overseas for competition or training ahead of the major games.

This scheme is a major games overseas competition and training support for athletes who have qualified for major games in 2022. With 3 major games (Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, SEA Games) in the same calendar, we have carved out support for athletes for 2022 from costs savings in optimising operations and improving efficiency.

The support caters for high performance athletes across the various age categories, to ensure proper support is given for any athlete who have demonstrated potential or ability to succeed.

Athletes who are already eligible for the scheme and have their overseas training and competitions plan approved will be able to get the amount to support their overseas expenses, and the scheme is also to athletes who may meet the standards in the coming months.
