Q) What are your hopes, dream and target this SEA Games?
To hopefully get a medal in my 200m individual event, to better the national records for my events (100m, 200m, 4x100m) and to break the long existing 4x400m national record!
Q) How’s your preparation for the SEA Games?
It’s going pretty well with the SEA Games coming up. Main goal is to ensure I am at top form with no injuries.
Q) What are some of the biggest challenges in your sports career so far leading to SEA Games and your athletics career?
I think the biggest would be battling injuries as well as juggling my other commitments which are school. Injuries bring about long pauses in your career and it require you to start all over again to get back to the top while school brings stress and lack of sleep.
Q) How did you specialise in your particular event? Why this event, what’s the attraction?
It started out in primary school when my coach saw me as a sprinter because that is what I am best at. I actually love my events because I saw that I was good at it and I could get better at it. It also the 2 shortest events, haha! But I do love the 4x400m relay as well as that’s a team effort.
Q) Who is your coach, tell us more about him/her. Also a mention of your previous coaches.
My current coach is Margaret Oh. She’s practically a second mum to me as she looks out for me both in sports as outside sports with the occasional scold for certain things. She definitely has my best interest n heart and wants to see me go far.
My previous coaches are Mr Lim Tiang Kee and Mr Pedro Acuna.
Q) Do you take care of your nutrition and diet? Your opinion on supplements and food.
I try to sometimes especially with the snacking habits I have. Instead of chips I eat fruits but that is pretty much it. I don’t take any supplements or powders.
Q) Aside from athletics, what else interest you? You could say the other part of your life beyond athletics.
I have a huge love for clothes, which led to my dream of being a fashion designer of sports attire for women because it combines the 2 biggest things I love in my life.
Q) How do you fit in your training/competing with your family and studies/work?
I mainly schedule my personal time around my training times and school. The 2 main priorities are training and school. From there I’ll see if I have time to spend with my family and friends! It’s actually more frequent than you would think, haha.
Q) Share with the readers, some aspects of your training regime.
It’s pretty much consisted of 2 speed sessions, 2 strength and conditioning sessions (gym with plyometric) and 2 endurance sessions. My coach would incorporate plyometric and core exercises in the various sessions as well.
Q) What are your long term athletics goals?
I want to be able to qualify for the Olympics and World Championships one day.
Q) What advice do you have for young aspiring athletes?
The journey is incredibly rough, but like what I always say, ‘it definitely not easy, but the best things in life never are’. You have to love what you do and enjoy yourself while doing it. Don’t let anything or anyone distract you from what you want to achieve in life. Also, be a good person. A sport has the power of making someone a great person both in sports and in character, so be a good one.
