Singapore, 11 Feb 2011 – Singapore Press Holdings (SPH), together with the Singapore Athletic Association (SAA), will host the annual SPH Schools Relay Championships at the Bukit Gombak Stadium from 26-27 March 2011. Participants from eligible schools and institutions can register from 14 February 2011.

Into its 19th year, the SPH Schools Relay Championships is a major highlight in the school sports calendar. A total of 24 races will be held over the two-day competition, comprising A Division (17-19 years); B Division (15-16 years) and C Division (13-14 years) for boys and girls. The Championships comprises four types of relays – 4x100m, 4x200m, 4x400m and 4x800m.

There will be six championship trophies given out to the division champions. The school with the most division championship titles will receive the SPH Overall Champions Trophy.

The best-performing relay team will be awarded the Tay Cheng Khoon Memorial Trophy. Inaugurated in 2008, the memorial trophy recognises the most outstanding relay team which successfully breaks a record by the biggest margin. Named after the late Straits Times Sports Editor who passed away in July 2007, the trophy is a tribute to his efforts as a school teacher who was passionate about sports, as well as his efforts to nurture youth through sports.

Ms Ginney Lim, Executive Vice-President of SPH’s Corporate Communications, said, “SPH is pleased to continue our partnership with SAA for the SPH Schools Relay Championships. This event has been a part of the thriving school sports scene for nearly two decades. It has groomed many talents and set new track records. We look forward to creating an unforgettable sporting experience for the athletes and their supporters.”

Mr Tang Weng Fei, President of SAA, said, “The SPH Schools Relay Championships is important to athletics in Singapore as our youth athletes are able to compete and demonstrate their team work proudly in their school colours. We hope to unearth some gems and have them don our national colours to compete for Singapore in the future.”

Last year, Anglo Chinese School (Independent) beat the Singapore Sports School to win the SPH Overall Challenge Trophy with its outstanding performances in the Boys’ B and C Division events. The other division champions were Singapore Sports School (C Division Girls), Nanyang Girls’ High School (B Division Girls), Hwa Chong Institution (College) (A Division Girls) and Raffles Institution (College) (A Division Boys).

Two new records were established last year, both by Anglo Chinese School (Independent) for the B Division Boys’ 4x100m and 4x400m events. The Tay Cheng Khoon Memorial Trophy was awarded to the Anglo Chinese School (Independent) for the B Division Boys’ 4x400m team, breaking the record held by the Singapore Sports School set in 2006 by more than 2 seconds.

Entry forms for the SPH Schools Relay Championships are available on the SAA website at www.singaporeathletics.org.sg from 14 February 2011. Registration closes on 11 March 2011.
