At the recently concluded Thailand Open Track and Field Championships 2011 which was held at Thammasat University Stadium, a small Team Team Singapore contingent of nine brought back home three gold and two silver.
The Open Championships was held in Rangsit, near to the capital of Bangkok, Thailand. The event spanned between 22nd till 25th April.
The impressive medal haul came from three hurdles, and two fields event, led by team manager Mr ONG Choon Poh.
The three medals that came from the hurdle camp, all three were achieved by Coach Viatcheslav Vassiliev girls.
Dipna Lim Prasad

Dipna Lim Prasad captured silver in the 100m women’s hurdles open final (0.838m) with a time of 14.58 seconds.
The Nanyang Tech University undergrad was just two hundredth of a second away from equaling her national mark of 14.56 seconds achieved earlier in January this year at SAA T&F Series 1.
With her 14.58 seconds effort, the 20-year-old has also inched closer to the SEA Games qualifying mark of 14.21 seconds. Currently Dipna is now within 5% of the SEA Games qualifying mark.

Junior hurdler Goh Wei Ning continues her excellent form by storming to gold in her 100m Hurdles Girls (0.762m) event. The Auckland University Technology student was clocked at 14.69 seconds.
The timing means that it’s good enough for her to get the nomination nod to qualify for the Commonwealth Youth Games 2011, where the qualifying mark stands at 14.73 seconds.
The international event to be held 7-11 this coming September at the Isle of Man, National Sports Centre, will be another big meet outing snagged under her belt for this promising 17-year-old, which now includes Youth Olympic Games to name a few.
T.Piriyah

Singapore Sports School alumni, T.Piriyah also romped away to gold in the girls junior 400m hurdles girls junior event (0.762m).
The women’s national record holder in the same event, won in a time of 65.04 seconds. It was a nail-biting race as her Thailand competitor pushed her all the way till the end. Only eighteen hundredth of a second separates the gold and silver.
The 19-year-old form is still a far-cry from her 61.69 seconds lifetime best achieved last year at the Asian Junior Championship. Piriyah has plans to rekindle that fine form, and would have to beat her own 400m hurdles women record, if she wants to meet the SEA Games qualifying time of 60.31 seconds.
Wan Lay Chi

The last two medal came from thrower Wan Lay Chi. One was gold, and the other a silver.
Capturing gold in the women’s shot put (4kg) event was even more satisfying for the 23-year-old knowing that she had beaten the last SEA Games silver medalist, Juthaporn Krasaeyan, who had to settle for second spot. Lay Chi managed an effort of 14.05 meters, while her Thai rival could only muster a 13.30 meter effort despite having home ground support.
Prior to this competition, the Wings Athletic Club athlete, Wan Lay Chi has already qualified for the SEA Games in the women’s shot put event at the recent SAA T&F Series 2.
The final medal from this Team Singapore outing came from Wan Lay Chi’s discus event (1kg). In the final the young thrower lost out the gold to SEA Games 2009 women’s discus champion Dwi Ratnawati.
The Indonesian managed a 48.13 meters final throw, while Wan Lay Chi came in second best with an effort of 43.24 meters. The young thrower commented that she’s on the hunt to qualify for SEA Games women’s discus event, where the qualifying mark stands at 49.12 meters.

Other notable result includes James Wong in the men’s discus event (2kg). The 42-year-old managed an effort of 49.34 meters, finishing in fourth position.
Gunning for his record tenth gold medal in his twelfth SEA Games outing, James still has plenty of work cut out for him as he has yet to meet the men’s discus SEA Games qualifying mark of 52.02 meters.
But it looks like the father of two is improving at each meet that he has taken part. His last outing prior to Thai Open, he hurled 46.79 meters at the SAA T&F Series 3. And now with his 49.34 meters effort in Thailand, he’s now within 6% of SEA Games qualifying mark.
