A throwback to 1984 Singapore Open Championship which was held at the Kallang National Stadium. The top photo shows former 400 metres record holder Haron Mundir (Representing Flash) pipped to the gold in the 200 metres men event by South Korean Kim Sang Moon.
It was a hand-timed race and both dipped together at the line with a timing of 21.5 seconds (HT) but the officials awarded the controversial win then to the Korean. There was no photo-finish to consult and decide the rightful winner.
Third spot was Malaysian Nordin Jadi in 21.6 seconds (HT).
Other results from that Championship includes Singapore sweep in the racewalk event. Ramasamy Tanabal clinched gold in the men 20km walk event in 1:47:50, silver was by R. Rajasegaran who was four minutes behind. While Margaret Tan earned silver in the women’s 5km walk event in 28:03.8 minutes.
Singapore’s Peh Seng Heng surprised the international field in the men pole vault event by soaring 4.10 metres to clinch gold.
