- Korea sending largest contingent of 46 participants.

- A look ahead towards next weekend of our local athletics marquee event, the 76th edition of our Singapore Open Track and Field Championships to be held at Choa Chu Kang Stadium. This year we attracted 222 oversea participants from Asian region, which is the highest number achieve in recent years. Within these numbers there are couple of 2010 Asian Games medallist, 2013 Asian Athletics Championships medallists and plenty of 2013 SEA Games medallists.
This is mainly due to the fact that our event is a good springboard for next month Asian Games host by Incheon, South Korea. Korea national team also send their largest contingent of 33 athletes to Singapore Open, with Japan and Malaysia sending 37 athletes and 32 athletes.
These are some of the events to watch:
Starting with the fastest event, Women 100m, Japan’s Nodaka Seko with a personal best 11.70. She will be rubbing shoulder with our very own local speedster Shanti Veronica Pereira, who had a personal best of 11.89 and still a junior. In the Men 100m, Japan’s Kazuya Murata and Korea’s Lim Hee Nam registered a personal best of (10.29) and (10.32), 3 of the Hong Kong’s Asian Athletics 4x100m gold medal relay team are also top candidates, Singapore’s Calvin Kang and Muhammad Naqib with a season best of (10.56) and (10.57) will need to better their current form to challenge for podium.
Women 200m, Japan’s Rio Banno with a personal best of 23.92 will be competing with some dark horses from Chinese Taipei, Thailand and Vietnam. Men 200m featured a field of 5 Japanese athletes having personal best of 21.08 and below, we could see a rising sun clean sweep.
In the quarter mile, for women Sri Lanka’s Subashini R.M Chandrika with Asian class standard of 52.36 will be meeting 16 years old Malaysian prodigy’s Siti Nur Afiqah, the Terengganu school girl won the Asian Junior Athletics Championships held in Taipei, she ran a personal best of 53.93. In the Men, Japan’s Souchiro Kawase (46.30) will be facing 2013 SEA Games Gold and Silver medallist from Philippine, Bagsit Archand Christian (47.11) and Edgardo Alejan Jr (46.95).
For the Women 100m hurdles, there will be SEA Games Silver medallist from Thailand, Punsoongneun Wallapa (13.38). Men 110m hurdles, where will be Kuwait’s Almandeel Abdulaziz (13.56), he was an Asian athletics Silver medallist, Asian Games Bronze medallist Park Taekyong (13.69) from Korea and SEA Games Gold medallist Rittidet Jamras (13.72) from Thailand. Women 400m hurdles will be dominate by Japan’s Manami Kira, Asian athletics Silver medallist, Men 400m hurdles will be dominate by Texas, USA based Philippine’s Eric Shawn Cray, SEA Games Gold medallist.
Likewise for Women 800m, Sri Lanka’s Nimali W.K.L.A. (2:04.32)will be easing to the podium, Men 800m will be a more exciting race as 4 athletes from 4 different countries registering 1:51.06 and below season’s best battling out for top 3, with SEA Games Silver medallist, Philippine’s Melvin Guarte who is also a NCAA standout .
Heading to the horizontal jumps, Asian Games Long Jump (8.20m) Gold a Triple Jump (17.10m) finalist, Korea’s Kim Deok Hyeon will be joining by SEA Games Gold, Philippine’s Dagmil Henry (7.99m). Women Long Jump, there will be Philippine’s Torres Marestella (6.68m) against Korea’s Bae Chanmi (6.36m). While Bae Chanmi (13.65m) will also going up against Malaysia’s Noor Amira (13.30m) in the Triple jump. Vertical jumps will be featuring a star studded Men Pole vault with 5 athletes registering above 5m, with Korea’s Han Duh Yeon leading with 5.45m. 4 of these athletes are National record holders of their respective countries are also expected to fight hard for medals. In the women we will be seeing Asian athletics Bronze medallist, Korea’s Lim Eun Ji with a season best of 4.10m and compatriot Choi Ye Eun with the same performance to battle for pride of place.
Over at the field, Men Shot put there will be Thailand’s SEA Games Gold, Khachin Thawat (17.54m) and Women Shot Put from Chinese Taipei, Lin Chai Ying (17.10m). Men Javelin will be 3 horses between Japan’s Kohei Hasegawa (76.75m), SEA Games record holder from Thailand, Jantra Peerachet (76.30m) and compatriot Rodmanee Hussadin (75.43m). In Men Discus, we will be seeing Malaysia’s junior, Muhammad Irfan (54.66m) who defeated our home grown multiple SEA Games Gold medallist, James Wong in last year SEA Games. Women Discus, Thailand’s SEA Games Gold medallist, Insaeng Sbenrat (56.77m) will be against Japan’s Ayumi Takahashi (54.22m). For the Hammer, it will be an all Korea affair for men and women, Lee Ywun Chul (72.98m) and Kang Naru (63.80m).
This year, we also see race walking moves out of stadium. Both the men and women 20k race walk will be conducted at scenic Garden by the Bay (East), Chinese Taipei’s Women record holder, Chang Chia Feng (1:40.46) will be plying her trade by the bay.
Last but not least, the finales of 4x100m men relay. Hong Kong’s Asian Athletics Gold medal team (38.94) will be the favourites to lead the race against our local multiple SEA Games Silver medal team, and the rest of the competitors to finish this Championships.
