400m ‘A’ Boys national school podium winners, from left, RI Seow Yeong Yang (2nd, 49.54s), RI Ng Chin Hui (1st, 48.98s), ACJC R. Avinash (3rd, 50.71s)

The 52nd National Inter School Track & Field Championships 2011 earlier today saw Raffles Institution’s Ng Chin Hui running below 49 seconds in the finals, to win bragging rights for the ‘A’ division 400m boys title.

Not since Hong Fulong Sandy hand-timed 48.80 seconds winning time in the National Schools back in 1984, has a schoolboy ever ran a sub-49 seconds race.

Chin Hui, currently a year one student obliterated the old electronic-timed record of 49.35 seconds held jointly by Shalindran Sathiyanesan of Millennia Institute set in 2008, and his fellow teammate Seow Yeong Yang, who equaled the old mark last Monday.

Coming into the race as the third fastest qualifier, the 17-year-old was allotted lane number three. His teammate Seow Yeong Yang, the fastest qualifier via the semifinal, started from lane four, while last year ‘A’ division 400m boys defending champion, ACJC’s R. Avinash was in lane five.

That prove to be a tactical advantage for Chin Hui, who is currently coached by Mr. Loh Chan Pew, as he came from behind, and made his move at the 300 meters mark. Seow Yeong Yang by then had no answer to his devastating kick, while R. Avinash recent dip in form was showing.

Ng Chin Hui goes on to win the race in a new Championship record time of 48.98 seconds, Seow Yeong Yang finished second in 49.54 seconds, and R. Avinash settled for bronze in a time of 50.71 seconds.

Raffles Institution relay team now boasting two runners capable of running a definite sub-50 seconds 400m timing, will the upcoming 4x400m race be a foregone conclusion? Well find out tomorrow, Thursday, as the heats for the event starts.
