The recently concluded SAA T&F Series 5 which was held over the weekend on the 16th of July, Saturday, at Bukit Gombak stadium saw two records tumble, pending ratification by SAA.

The series which was specially held as a trial for our local athletes to qualify for the SEA Games was an excellent outing for the pole vaulters.

Two athletes from coach David Yeo pole vault stable, saw Rachel Isabel Yang and Chan Sheng Yao, erasing the national women and under-17 boys pole vault record respectively.

The two became the eleventh and twelfth Singapore athlete to have qualified for the biennial Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang at the end of the year.

The 29-year-old Rachel, successfully surpassed the 3.75 meters SEA Games qualifying mark on her second attempt at the height. Feeling confident, she raised the bar to 3.82 meters and successfully vault over the height on her first attempt. On her next three attempts, she tried the 3.90 and 4.00 meters height, but without success.

As for the 15-year-old Chan Sheng Yao, he improved his lifetime best by a staggering 24 centimeters. His previous best was 4.38 meters established in April at the National School. He met the SEA Games qualifying mark of 4.50 meters after his second attempt at the meet, and finally vault over 4.62m next successfully. His newly-minted U17 boys record better the old mark of 4.61m by Sean Lim (National Junior, 31 May 2009).

Other notable performances from Series 5 includes Gary Yeo’s 100m Men 10.62 seconds run. It was just 0.01 seconds away from the 100m men SEA Games qualifying mark of 10.61 seconds. The 25-year-old improved his previous season-best of 10.67 seconds (2 Apr, Series 3), to 10.62 seconds, which is also a new PB for him. He was part of the 40.17s relay squad that ran at the recent Asian Championship.
