The IAAF World Youth Championships in Athletics is a global athletics event comprising track and field events for competitors who are 17 or younger (youth).

The event is organized by International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). It is held biennially. It was first held in 1999.

World Youth Championships is not to be confused with IAAF World Junior Championships in Athletics, which is for athletes who are 19 or under.

Selection criteria

    a. Qualifying rules and standards stipulated by IAAF (Link)

    b. Qualifying Window Stipulated by IAAF (Link: Coming Soon)

    c. If only 2 or 1 Athlete per country is allowed to be entered and more then 2 or 1 Athlete meet/s the qualifying mark:

      i. A final run/jump/throw-off trial will be held before the EBN date.

      ii. The trial date will be announced once SAA receives the date for the EBN from organizer.

      iii. For the relays the best 8 on-form Athletes will be invited to form the team but a final run-off will be conducted to select the final relay runners before the EBN date.

    d. If no one meets the qualifying mark and if SAA is given 2 wild card entries, one best male and one best female will be selected based on the respective ranking of the performance according to % off the Qualifying marks using the IAAF 2011 points. All field and Team (Relay) events selection are further subject to IAAF approval.

    e. SAA reserves the right to drop any qualified Athlete if the Athlete is deemed unfit to perform at a competitive level.

Entry

Age Categories

    Only athletes aged 16 or 17 on 31 December in the year of the competition (e.g. for the 2013 Championships, born in 1996 or 1997) may compete.

Submission of Entries and deadlines

    Preliminary Entries – 10 April 2013 midnight, Monaco time. Preliminary Entries may be submitted starting 11 March 2013.

    Final Entries – 24 June 2013 midnight, Monaco time (see note above). Final Entries may be submitted starting 27 May 2013.

    Final Confirmations – Final Confirmation of Entries must be made before 12am (midday) 9 July.

Conditions for Validity of Performances

    • All performances must be achieved during the period 1 October 2012 to 1 July 2013. Please note that the Final Entries deadline remains three Mondays before the first day of competition, i.e. 24 June 2013.

    • All performances must be achieved during an official competition organised in conformity with IAAF Rules.

    • All performances must be achieved during competitions organised or sanctioned by the IAAF, its Area Associations or its Member Federations. Thus, results achieved at school competitions must be certified by the Member Federation of the country in which the M/03/13 14 competition was organised.

    • Performances achieved in mixed events between male and female participants (see Rule 147) will only be accepted under the following circumstances:

      o For all field events and races of 5000m and over held completely in the stadium the
      results will be:

        – Automatically accepted if achieved at National Permit competitions

        – Accepted only with the Area Association’s approval if achieved at competitions under IAAF Rule 1.1 (i) and (j)

        – Never accepted if achieved at competitions conducted under IAAF Rule 1.1 (a) to (h)

      o For road races (race walks) the results will always be accepted

    • Wind assisted performances (over 2m/sec) will not be accepted.

    • Indoor performances will be accepted.

    • For the running events of 200m and over, performances achieved on over-sized tracks will not be accepted.

    • In the case of race walks, road performances (5km or 10km) shall be accepted.
